Micah and Potty

We started teaching Micah about the potty over my Christmas break, and have had a few succeses, and he's holding it longer. Does really well on outings where he's back packed, and Tuesday this week he had a success on the big potty with the sitter, and a poop later in the afternoon.

Micah Heart

Micah has a heart defect, Atrial Septal Defect, ASD of moderate size. Today when I changed his diaper before bed (and he was quite crabby at 6 earlier than normal) his legs had a slight off ness to the color, not pink, not blue, but not the color of baby legs. So I'll be calling the Heart Doctor tomorrow to take a look.

Micah was babbling in the back seat

I heard him say "William, open up, AWhhh" This is often what we tell William when we're trying to feed him.

Micah's new Diagnosis

Micah had a Heart Murmur at his last check up, and as such it is normal for them to refer to a cardiologist for review testing to verify if the murmur indicates anything significant. At the Cardiologist they found a Moderate sized Atrial Septal Defect (ASD).

At about 3 years of age findings indicate if the defect will be large enough to require closure, ore small enough to never need closure. At this point there is no required restriction or precautions and they want to follow up in a year.

Train Ride

We took the Heartland express to OKC from Ft Worth, it was fun for most. Both Tommy and Micah are big train lovers, and W's seems to love trains too. Micah will look at books for a long time especially if the book has any trains in it. He loves both books and trains. While in OKC we went to a minor league Base Ball Game, and White Water where both Tommy and Micah loved the water. William liked floating in the water too, but also took a nap in the stroller in the shade while we were there too.

Unfortunately after the trip Rob woke up Monday morning unable to get out of bed due to his back pain. He spent the week in bed, and riding laying down in the expedition to the doctor for some pain meds, then started to feel better after a steroid shot on Friday. We went for a consult with the surgeon Today, who's not recommending anything till after a fresh MRI, but based on his symptoms may need a diskectomy sp?.

Wednesday last week we met with the equipment guy and decided on a wheelchair for William, and picked colors, black and red, and did measurements. We hope to see the equipment sometime in August or September (after insurance approval, ordering, building, assembly, and delivery).

Micah is in his third week of swim lessons and doing great! He's jumping into the pool and swimming, but still needs to get more comfortable in a float to graduate.

William we changed his medication to one that didn't have splenda in it. This Pedi doesn't ever prescribe anything with artificial sweeteners, and won't let the reps leave samples in her office. It's processed through the liver, and can cause liver failure. She firmly believes children should NEVER have artificial sweeteners. Especially a child already on medication processed through the liver. She referred me to http://www.suepalmer.co.uk/toxic.php if more information was needed, and the book on Toxic Child.

She also prescribed William a pediatric Manual Wheelchair, we meet with the rep next wednesday to place our order!! The best pictures are in this catelog: of what we are looking at: http://www.ottobock.ca/cps/rde/xbcr/ob_us_en/04040502.1C-TherapistGuideV2.pdf They also mentioned something like this: http://shopping.msn.com/ImageViewer.aspx?mcatId=4796&dpid=7&itemid=1009135218&hsv=HDs2MFMNx%2bk%3d, but it would have the similar supports seen in the Kimba in the other magazine.

Dr Visit today

Tommy got to go to the res-bit program at his school today while we went to the GI doctor's appointment.

Dr looked at William and was very good with him, made him smile and treated him like any normal kid. We'll have to do a scope thingy to check his stomach, throat, and upper intestines to see if there is any problems. Since he's going to have to be out anyway for the GI thingy, were going to do an MRI on him since he's out anyway.

On another note we noticed Micah now has 7 teeth and is working on number 8 (2 more lower teeth.) He's also crusing the furnature a little more librally (ie holding on even less, and walking about 3/4 the way across the room now. Also he finds any loose items and they suddenly become crusing toys to push around the room (ie chairs at the doctors office).

Oh and Tommy this evening while I was cooking dinner decided I was a bad Girl and had to stand in timeout. So I stood there like a good girl (trying to be a good example) while daddy pleaded with Tommy to let me out of timeout so I could cook dinner.

After dinner Tommy went with me to get my tire hole looked at on my car. We put air in it and headed to discount tire. They checked it, and found a nail that had damaged the side wall, so they put the donut tire on because they didn't have any used tires that we could put on (and it was closing time when we pulled up). We'll call them tomorrow to see if they have any used tires.

First:

William is Laughing!
We didn't capture the whole out giggle, but you get the idea!

Micah is taking steps, and really trying to communicate! (Insert pictures here...ya...bad mommy no pictures to put here...mainly because he's always saying "UP" to me and making me hold him and it's hard to hold a camera while holding a baby.

Tommy's going to start a preschool soon 2 days a week 6 hrs a week. 9:30-12:30 Monday and Wednesday. It's called the CC Relief Nursery, for families with more than 2 stressors to give us a break and positive role modeling for Tommy. Also they do breakfast, lunch, and snack, and better yet ITS FREE! They have 2 teachers and 2 volunteers for 8 kids!! Pray they get volunteers soon and as soon as they do they can start having classes monday and wednesday!
Also, Tommy is loving swimming and getting outside again! We've had a few warmer days and it's great. He helped his dad mow with the bubble mower, and they they both took a swim afterwards. Along with playing in the creek for hours (sorry papa, we got our cool new shoes all muddy, but mommy washed them) with daddy and having fun!

Yearly Checkups

Here's the stats for all you stat addicts:

Tommy (3 years)
Height: 38.5in 32%
Weight: 38lbs 4oz 85%
Head Circumference: 21in: 92%
Concerns: I had a concern about him acting crazy when it's been a while since he's eaten possibly concern for his blood sugar, and so she checked that and it was normal. She discussed what he was doing and everything was exactly as it should, she suggested teaching him his address and phone number, and stranger danger safety.

William (1 year)
Height: 29in 25.7% (Yeh! he's on the charts!)
Weight: 16lbs 0.05% (following the same curve of the chart, but off the bottom)
Head Circumference: 17in 0.55% (following the same curve of the chart, but off the bottom)
No suggestions with him, other than we were meeting with the nutritionist that afternoon, and we discussed the help and therapy he was getting and they were happy with that.

Micah (1 year) (he was plotted on the girl charts oops need to correct that with the doctor, so this means that the precentiles are a little high for him)
Height: 31in 95.86% (probably more like 85% on boy charts)
Weight: 20.94lbs 49.25% (probably more like 25% on boy charts)
Head Circumference: 18.5in 93.2% (probably more like 45% on boy charts)
Concerns/Directions: We had a concern about diaper rash and pee burn, and she suggested malox, so we're trying that, and she suggested getting rid of bottle and putting him fully on sippys, which we already did, and a few other developmental things, that I'm not sure I remember. It was a quick appointment, with no major issues or concerns, she was very happy wtih language and other development for him too.

William and Micah are ONE!

William Josiah, You are quite the child, I'm so glad you are here. You've taught me so much already. We've been through so many struggles already, and more to come. You have the determination to make it, and you will succeed. Here's a little of what you are doing now and what you are like: You are holding sit for several seconds to several minutes, you can follow simple directions and answer simple questions, You love to stand, and laugh and giggle, you listen so intently to all that's around you, you say hi to almost everyone, and chat with those around you. You light up when anyone pays any attention to you and you draw the light from the whole room when you do. You capture the heart of every therapist and all those that try to help you. You are so happy and content despite your struggles, You are ever watching all that's around you, and learning so much. Your name truly fits, you are Strong, and healed by God.

Micah Joe, You are a blessing from God as your name indicates. You have also taught me alot. You are patient, and inquisitive, and independent, yet vocal when you have a need or opinion. You are playful and happy. Here's a little of what you are doing: You are playing with your older brother, and following him where ever he goes. You are riding the scooter all by yourself, and trying to ride Tommy's tricycle. You are taking steps when you don't pay attention to how you are going to get there. You can crawl faster than lightening, and you try to say anything that those around you say. You are talking complete sentences, and letting us know your needs. You say, "Mama, I want ba-ba!" very clearly, along with "All done.", and "Hot.", "Hi.", "Hi there!", "Hi William", and other things that I can't think of right now. You love to be outside, and climb the play ground equipment by yourself (scaring mama).

William at Gymboree

We go to Gymboree play gym with the babies, during Tommy's nap.

Micah like's crawling on all the obsticals, hiding in tunnels and tents.

William loves the freeze dance, bouncing on any gym piece, and looking through tunnels really helps his eyes. And during our class I get one more hour of working with William and playing with him, kind of like an inexpensive therapy time for William, since he has to spend so much time just sitting in his seat looking around the room at home.

And Tommy can go to the open Gyms with either Just Mommy or with his brothers too. Tommy really loves it when he gets Tommy time (Just Mommy and Tommy) at Gymboree. He asks about it, and if it's been a while since we've been he'll ask to go.

Friday Morning we went to open gym, and at the end they do Gymbo clown stamps on feet, hands, and tummys. The big kids were all lined up for stamps and William was sitting with me a row behind the big kids. All the big kids got their stamps, and William was squirming like he wanted something. I told the teacher I think William wants a stamp, and she asked him and he made this "Ahhh!" sound like yes I do want a stamp, and got this big grin like he thought we'd never ask. So he got a Gymbo stamp on his hand and he smiled so proudly. He also smiled so proudly every time I repeated the story to friends at play group, and to Daddy and to Grandma. This is also one of the first time's I've seen him "ahead" of Micah, Micah was there, and was more interested in climbing and being active on the toys than in the Gymbo stamps, so he was paying no attention to everybody getting stamps.

Quick Update on Micah

Micah is crawling around all over the place, and pulling up on everything.

Saturday night I noticed Micah got his first tooth! Bottom left.

He's also been saying a few sentences:
All done.
Hi there.
I want Ba-Ba.
I want dink.
The "Hi, there." copied my mom saying it several times, so I'm positive we're not hearing things, and he's repeated it for several people, and everybody clearly understood.

His other words include:
Daddy,
Momma,
Hunter,
More,
Ba-Ba,

He gestured that someone hit him yesterday when the sitter was asking her own child if she had just hit Micah, he was telling her yes she had.

He is very vocal, and if you aren't right or he wants mama its the end of the world, especially if he knows I'm around and accessible.

Oh and Micah and Tommy have really started to play together, they will do things to make each other laugh, and Micah tries to follow and do everything that Tommy does, including climb slides, bounce in bounce houses, jump and dance.

Adventures in Food

Micah is interested in food, so when he's acting hungry, and has just nursed recently, or we're eating and he's interested we put him at the table with some food in front of him and he gets what he can to his mouth. This style of food introduction is called "baby led weaning" you can read more about it on Wikipedia. Micah enjoys: tortillas, chicken, peas, apples, bananas, yogurt, cheese sticks, and I'm sure there's some other things I'm leaving off.

William is a bit more of a challenge to me, I'm not really sure how to do it since I've never fed a baby "baby food". So far I've offered him peas by holding them to his mouth and he eats them just fine, but can't quite get the food to his own mouth due to his troubles. So since he's interested in food, I needed to find some way to feed him. Micah was having Bananas and chicken tonight for dinner, so I took a piece of banana and chopped it with the pampered chef chopper, and did the same with some chicken, I offered them seperately, and got quickly tired of that, so I mixed them together, and added a little oil (for calories), and some applesauce since I was serving apple sauce to Tommy, and fed him with a spoon, just putting it near his mouth careful to not insert the spoon too far, and he ate the whole thing and then drank 2-3 oz of mommy milk!

Halloween and greeness for all!

We've all been through the stomach bug now, you can see the picture below of Micah shortly after he got sick, I thought he looked quite green. I think this is why William wasn't quite right last weekend, I think that's when he had it. Tommy had it Sunday Night Monday, and wasn't completely better till Wednesday. I had it Wednesday evening, Thursday. Micah had it Friday am. And Rob had it while he was gone hunting. We're all much better now! Thank goodness! No fun!

On Halloween, we took the kids trick - or - treating to a few houses, and the the babies stayed home with my friend Kati since Micah was sick, and took Tommy up to church to play in the bounce house, and eat all they candy he so desired.

New Routine

We've been working on our new routine around here. I've started back at work, and the kids are getting used to the new/old sitter watching them. Courtney watched Tommy when he was 3-9 months old, and she's coming to our house and watching all the kids (she brings her 2 with her) and does a great job with everybody, and Tommy has a play mate. Also Tommy has started talking a lot more. This week will be our first week on our new regular schedule as our therapy settles into a more routine regular time. Also we will have a new PT therapist this week, as the one we did the evaluation with isn't available at the time we needed, so our Therapist name will be Lydia B. Micah is really getting up on all 4s all the time now and inching forward. I expect him at any time to crawl all the way across the room.

Lots of stuff happening this week.

Well Tuesday I went to the pedi and got a weight check for William. He was 12# 5.5 oz (up from 10#13.5oz) and HC of 16.25in (up from 15.5) and 25.5" long (same). This is GREAT! it's been about 3 weeks since the last weight check. Micah in his clothes was about 17# 5oz. So they are maintaining the 5# gap.

Wednesday we had therapy PT from 11-12, and that went great, lots of stretching and getting the eyes to move to the left. Then that same afternoon we had OT with ECI at the house, and that went fine also, some more of the same.

Then Thursday am when I gave him the 5am dose of medicine he was in the fetal position (normally legs are straight and hands are out), so that's a HUGE improvement, and one hand was also up by his mouth. He's never really figured out how to bring his hands to mid line, much less to his mouth, so again that's a wonderful improvement too! Thursday 11am we had our CST session, with Sally Fryer (PT that worked with the conjoined Egyptian twins), and during the session we were playing with Micah and Micah was giving William kisses on the cheek, and Micah was smiling about it and William was smiling about it, until one of the times we went to give kisses, Micah's arm flew up and he put his hand on Williams cheek instead, only his fingernail went in William's eye (William's reflexes are slower due to his injury), and William cried this soft cry and kept his eyes closed for a while, and when he did open them finally something just didn't look right to me, so when we finished our session I called an optometrist, and they said with the situation and him being so young we should go to
Children's or our Pediatrician, well the Pediatrician had just gone to lunch and we couldn't get a hold of them, so we headed down to Children's, there was no line, so we checked in, and saw a doctor within about an hour. The resident didn't see anything, so she left and came back with the attending, she brought a dye, and light to look at his eye, sure enough he did scratch the eye ball, and we needed to put ointment on for 5 days and follow back up with our pedi in a week. The pediatrician finally returned our message as we were leaving the hospital, so we scheduled the follow-up appointment. And headed home. Then we called the LC to check on getting some parts for pumping at work since I start back to work on Sept 2nd. This way I can keep a pump parts at work and a set at home, and can never forget them this way. She had them, so we drove to her house to pick them up, and then back home again and stopped at Tom Thumb where we ran in to Grandma to fill our prescription for the eye ointment.

Happenings...Life...Thoughts....

Everybody tells me Wiliam looks like he's getting big, and I agree he does. I haven't made it by the pedi's to get another weight though, and I"m officially pulling 0-3 months clothes out of our closet. Both boys are still fitting 3-6 month clothes, but Micah easily wears 6-12 months cloths also.

I called Scottish Rite, and they said he needed a orthepedic problem to be a candidate, and he has the problems with torticallis, so I put a call in to our pedi to get a referral, and haven't heard back. At first she said we needed to talk to the physical therapists, and chiropractors about that, but we're already doing that. So maybe.... I am still thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea to see a neurologist with more experience with CP cases, even if it doesn't end up being at Scottish Rite.

At our PT session last time they suggested I call an upholstery place to make a crash pad (where they put the foam blocks in a duve), for help propping him up in the posisitons he needs to be etc. So I called one today and they said they'd be happy to help and had tons of scraps. So we may "swing" by down town off industrial to pick up foam pieces, for our crash pad.

Williams still eating average over 30 oz a day. I've got a call in to the LC to see where he should be (oz per day).

Micah is still scooting, it appears he can now go both forward or back, but doesn't have much control over which way, he's still coordinating that, but he is always trying to MOVE. He's also got quite the since of humor. He finds sneezes laughable, and loves making faces (usually smiling) at anyone who will listen or pay attention.

Our day today consisted of a play date with the local MOMs Club at 10am followed by a quick trip to the store for this weeks groceries, (I'm still doing a meal plan for the week and I'm going on 6 home cooked (weekday) meals in a row. Might I add the trip to the store was with 2 babies and a toddler, we got most of what we needed, but William screemed at me the whole time because I was a bad mommy and forgot his milk at home, and it was time for his next dose too.

Then we went home unloaded groceries, feed 2 babies, put everybody down for naps, put the groceries away, gave william his meds, (not necessarily in that order), made lunch, fed everybody lunch, handled a time out and a tantrum, then there was peace till about 4 when babies and toddlers started to wake up while I was in the middle of preparing dinner. Yes we praise God for 3 hour naps around here still!

Then we had floor time and bottles, and snacks while we waited for Daddy to get home so we could eat our dinner. After dinner we had some play time and quickly headed to bed. I nursed the baby, fed the other one a bottle, and then layed down with the toddler for a few minutes.

Mother of a "Special" Child

When I was young, I'd often say,
I'd like to be a mom someday
While playing with my baby doll,
I thought that job's not hard at all

I'd have a baby, maybe two,
a girl in pink...a boy in blue
Well I grew up and sure enough,
I'm now a mom and gosh it's tough

The baby that was sent to me,
was born with disabilities
At first I'm frightened through and through,
there's much to learn to care for you

This wasn't in my plans at all,
when I was young and played with dolls
Your mind and body were so weak,
you might not ever walk or speak

So much special care required,
I'm often scared and often tired
As months and years go slowly by,
I smile a lot but sometimes cry

To watch you grow and not complain,
though you endure your share of pain
Oh, how I'd hold you and I'd pray,
that you'd be healed and whole someday

But I knew that was not to be,
not physically or mentally
And so I taught you best I could,
your progress wasn't very good

But then one day I realized,
as I gazed into your loving eyes
That I had learned so much from you,
determination...courage too

A love so unconditional,
it floods my soul and always will
I'm proud to say I gave you birth,
for you're an angel here on earth.

God Choose a mother for a "Special" child

Most women becaome mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressure and a couple by habit.

This year nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of handicapped children. Did you ever wonder how mothers of handicapped children are chosen?

Somehow I visualize God hovering over earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger.

"Armstrong, Beth; son. Patron saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity."

"Forrest, Marjotie; daughter. Patron saint, Cecelia."

"Rutledge, Carrie; twins. Patron saint, Matthew."

Finally He passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a handicapped child."

The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy."

"Exactly," smiles God, "Could I give a handicapped child to a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel."

"But she has patience?" asked the angel.

"I don't want her to have to much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she'll handle it."

"I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence that is so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has his own world. She has to make her live in her world and that's not going to be easy."

"But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you." God smiles, "No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect - she has just enough selfishness." The angel gasps - "selfishness? is that a virtue?"

God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a 'spoken word'. She will never consider a 'step' ordinary. When her child says 'Momma' for the first time, she will be present at a miracle, and will know it!"

"I will permit her to see clearly the things I see...ignorance, cruelty, prejudice....and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life, because she is doing My work as surely as if she is here by My side".

And what about her Patron saint? asked the angel, his pen poised in mid-air.

God smiles, "A mirror will suffice."
